The BBC have released promotional pictures of Catherine Tate (Donna Noble) in the new BBC One sitcom, Big School where she plays a French teacher (she teaches it, she's not actually French) - click on the images included here for bigger versions. Prices start from £20.50 for adults and £14.50 for children, which includes general admission to the Doctor Who Experience and the TARDIS studio set tour, or £25.50/£14.40 respectively to include a walking tour of filming locations around Cardiff Bay. Doctor Who exhibitions are nothing new. The first one was set up in 1973 at Longleat in Wiltshire, and for most of the past 40 years there's been a display somewhere of props, sets and monsters from the show, delighting children and making adults feel like kids again. All marvelous, of course, but here's something new: never before in Doctor Who's 50-year history has it been possible for fans to visit not only a brilliant exhibition, but also to step through the actual doors of the "real" TARDIS - as seen on TV!
BBC Worldwide have now revealed the masterplan they had in mind when the Doctor Who Experience was set up in Cardiff Bay last year, next to the BBC Roath Lock Studios where the show is filmed. From the big blue DWE building, it's just a leisurely 5 minute stroll to the security gate that allows backstage access to the studio complex. Accompanied by a BBC guide, tour groups will be able to pass through the gate and find themselves in Studio 4, home of the TARDIS. As always with the TARDIS, there are monsters outside. Currently, the set is guarded by a bronze Dalek and Weeping Angel. Incongruously, there's a seating area of comfy chairs borrowed from various BBC living room sets, where visitors can wait their turn to enter the TARDIS. There's also a TV showing (what else?) Doctor Who. Guests enter the TARDIS in small groups, not because the set is small (it's huge!) but because keeping the set uncrowded offers the best viewing and photo experience.
The moment when the BBC guide opens those blue doors has to be one of the biggest thrills a Who fan could ever have.
And then you're there: on the high platform next to the central console, with the time rotor and domed ceiling high above you, and the floor way below in shadow. As we know from TV, this is a 360-degree set - there's no "missing" wall where the camera peeks in. You're completely in the TARDIS. Lights flash, screens flicker their timey-wimey patterns. The clever boys and girls of the BBC crew can even play the dematerialisation sound effects over hidden speakers, as they did when Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall visited recently. Fantastic!
Honestly, I wasn't sure about this new TARDIS when I saw it on TV. Too grey, I thought, and that side console looks more Star Wars than Doctor Who... But, standing on the set, I love it. It's kept many of the best elements of the "coral" and "steampunk" TARDISes, and has loads of nods to the "classic" era too. Most importantly, it's the TARDIS. Like the Doctor is the Doctor. And anyway, if you prefer one of the other sets, they're all next door in the Doctor Who Experience. The BBC's current plan is to keep Roath Lock Studio 4 open to DWE visitors through Aug 25. The studio tours will be available as another add-on to the regular DWE package, like the recently-introduced walking tour of Doctor Who locations in Cardiff Bay. The Doctor Who Experience really is the ultimate day out for fans in the show's anniversary year. Come to Cardiff Bay for your adventure in space and time!

A special boxset treat for the middle of summer for Who fans, specifically those of the Fourth Doctor, Tom Baker. Arguably the most loved and the "best" (I should point, however, he is not my favourite), this tribute to the longest-serving (in proper, real terms) is a superb collection of collectibles which includes the first DVD outing for the truly classic story, Terror of the Zygons.
The Zygons have long been a favourite of fans due to their incredible realisation on screen and their brilliant one-time appearance (at the time of writing - the sucker-clad bad boys are due to make an appearance later this year in the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special), and now their debut gets a digital release. I shan't go on too much about the story itself, as I will review it in more depth for its DVD release later this year, but Zygons is most definitely one of my favourite Tom Baker stories.
Apart from the Skarasen (still mind-bogglingly awful after all these years and not CGd up for this release), it's a perfect tale with Baker, Sladen et al in top, top form and some mighty fine direction from one of Who's best, Douglas "The Guv'nor" Camfield. Also worthy of a mention is the sublime soundtrack from Geoffrey Burgon - a work of outstanding delicate and evocative beauty.Terror of the Zygons is presented here on one disc with no extras and in a special case (see above) with its own special DVD menu too. Strangely, but most welcome, Terror is also available with a 5.1 soundtrack which is a nice treat for audio lovers. One awaits its own DVD release later this year with trouser-tightening anticipation.
The other DVD included, An Interview with the Time Lord, is a twenty-five minute interview with the man himself, Tom Baker. Captured in what looks like a local pub, Tom is engaging as ever with some new stories and some made-up (as only Tom can do). Hearing the former Time Lord chat about his colleagues and, specifically, the regeneration scenes, is a sad affair; Pertwee, by Baker's account, wasn't "very affectionate" towards his successor.It's a tad odd on the production front as it's heavily edited and takes more the form of a Q&A as opposed to a more fuller interview, with answers quite short and sometimes bereft of a fuller answer. Oddly, despite Baker discussing his career as The Doctor, all the clips shown during the interview are from the accompanying story, Terror of the Zygons (and more than not, the clips have nothing to do with what Tom is discussing and inserted at unrelated moments).
On the audio front there's the excellent Genesis of the Daleks, first released on vinyl back in 1979. A cracking piece of archive material featuring the television soundtrack along with Tom's linking narration. There's even a book, Tomb of Valdemar by Simon Messingham, included for page-turning lovers. Set during the Fourth Doctor’s search for the Key to Time, the novel was released as part of the "past Doctors" range in 2000. I have to admit that it's inclusion is perhaps questionable, with perhaps a classic Target novelisation more appropriate to celebrate the Tom Baker era.For toy fans there's the neat post-regeneration Fourth Doctor action figure, featuring Tom Baker's Doctor in the costume of his predecessor, Jon Pertwee (pictured right). A wonderful addition to anyone's collection - and very rare too as it is exclusive to this set. There's also a Fourth Doctor sonic screwdriver and a lovely, lovely letter written by Baker to his fans. It's such a nice touch and delightful to know that Tommy B cares so much for the millions of people whose lives he touched over the years.
The set is beautifully presented in a rather swish box, very stylish and very Doctor Who - as are the specially presented discs and book inside, truly Gallifreyan. Also incredibly stylish are the companion art cards included, all good enough to be framed and mounted on a wall, stunning eloquent in their monochrome glory. The Fourth Doctor Time Capsule is a glorious item and, at only five thousand copies, very limited and extremely collectible. Definitely for the more hardcore of fans but most assuredly a brilliant gift for any Who fan. Buy now and then wait until Christmas to give!

Remembrance of the Daleks

Another sell out, packed house (not to mention those queuing for hours for return tickets), the BFI's celebration of the Seventh Doctor era on the London's Southbank was greeted by a hugely appreciative audience.
Before the first ep of the classic 1988 four-parter featuring the mad little bastards from Skaro, we were treated to the surprise of a John Leeson appearance and interview to kick off the day. As voice of the Battle Computer in Remembrance of the Daleks (which was news to me, it has to be said!), Leeson is, of course, better known as the voice of K9. The actor made for a wonderful guest with his endearing humour and soothing voice (and even delved into some tin dog antics for us). To cap it off, the big screen showed the opening title sequence to the charming Doctor Who spin-off, K9 & Company. The audience's delight was palpable and was applauded warmly and with great humour.
The episodes of Remembrance looked surprisingly good on the big screen, in terms of picture quality. Given that it was first broadcast twenty-five years ago or so and shot on video, as opposed to the flashy HD we have now, it looked grand and even exciting in the cinema theatre.It's a cracking old yarn and despite a great number of very wobbly and shakey Dalek action (and the odd wobbly and shakey performance too) it was a real pleasure sitting down to watch it with a few hundred fellow fans. I'm not a particular admirer of the Seventh Doctor era and it had been approximately eight years since I'd last watched the story - so it was an almost fresh watch. The gathered crowd were hugely engaged with applause for Michael Sheard's appearance and also the Special Weapons Dalek (and many laughs and guffaws at the numerous gags throughout).
In between some eps more guests were brought out for our delectation and deliberation. Legendary special effects guru Mike Tucker, who has worked on the show in both pre- and post-2005 (most recently on Cold War and the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special) chatted enthusiastically about his rise from teen fan making films at home to actually working on the show he loved so much. A heart-warming interlude. Similarly, Dick Mills of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop was brought on to a rousing reception, and chatted expertly about his time on the show. Again, another fascinating interview with a man whose legacy and output will be long remembered.
The full panel Q&A after the story was screened could not have been much better in terms of guests for the era (though Bonnie Langford and Andrew Cartmel did send their apologies for not being present). Remembrance writer Ben Aaronovitch (and also Battlefield) was joined by Sophie Aldred (Ace) and Sylvester McCoy (The Seventh Doctor) and the onscreen chemistry between the pair was evident as ever in person as they fondly remembered their years together.
A particular highlight was hearing McCoy discuss his time filming the 1996 Paul McGann television movie (screening at the BFI in October), comparing his luxurious conditions and treatment in North America with the less than favourable ones he experienced at the BBC.Another top event from the BFI who pull out all the stops for these Doctor Who screenings, bringing in fantastic guests with wonderful stories and love to share. Their time on the show might have been comparatively small, but Sylvester and Sophie's remembrance looms large.

Doctor Who audio producers Big Finish are looking to make their first feature film - a movie-length version of the short film, Cleaning Up, which starred Louise Jameson, Mark Gatiss and Tracy-Ann Oberman (Army of Ghosts/Doomsday) and voice of the Daleks, Nicholas Briggs. The film, written and directed by The Guerrier Brothers (who have produced a number of excellent Who documentaries, amongst other things), is looking for funding and you can find out more in the player above.

Toy manufacturer Character Options have unveiled a brand new Doctor Who 50th Anniversary range featuring Rare, Super Rare and Ultra Rare micro-figures. As the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who moves ever closer, a brand new ultimate range of Doctor Who micro-figures featuring all eleven incarnations of the Doctors will be released for the Character Building collection. Each highly detailed and fully articulated micro-figure is sealed within a bag to keep the figure hidden, giving a surprise each time. Finding them all will be a challenge as some figures will be harder to find than others. Within the new range, certain incarnations of the Time Lord will be classed as Rare, Super Rare or Ultra Rare. Here’s what to look out for:

I shan't bore you with my thoughts on this classic tale, having already been released on DVD (so I'm sure you've got it already), but The Green Death is one of the most iconic adventures not only of the Jon Pertwee era, but also of all Doctor Who serials. Frequently (and fondly) remembered as “the one with the maggots”, this tale of ecological doom strongly evokes the growing awareness of our impending environment crisis, when it first came to public attention in the 1970s.
However, the story also marked the departure of the Katy Manning's Jo Grant and heralded the start of the slow break-up of the UNIT family – indeed, the farewell of Jo has often been cited as a rare example of classic Who embracing a more emotional tone we find now in "new" Who, with the finale offering a dramatic template on which the revived series draws on. As such, this release celebrates the influence of The Green Death on the revival and rightly offers the most for fans of both old and new Who.
Also included as an extra is Death Of The Doctor, a The Sarah Jane Adventures two-parter that featured both Matt Smith's Time Lord and Katy Manning's last appearance (to date) as Jo on-screen. This is a lovely addition that not only really showcases SJA at its best, but also a rare, lone example of Russell T Davies writing for The Eleventh Doctor. The Green Death contains a wonderful collection of riches for fans of the series, no matter their age. Aside from the usual Who DVD goodies (the well-established PDFs, fascinating Production Subtitles and Photo Galleries), there are some incredibly fun and well-produced featurettes - most notably The One With The Maggots, a documentary on the making of this production. Also included is a fascinating extended look at the FX creation of the iconic maggot monsters themselves, extended interviews with Robert Sloman and Stuart Bevan, some nostalgic clips from Wales Today with Jon Pertwee (which tell you what happened to the location later in the 1990s) and a look at Katy Manning's post-Who pottery series (yes, you read that correctly), amusingly titled Serendipity.
Given that Russell T Davies often talks about the emotional impact of this serial on both him as a child and on his approach on how he handled Who's revival, then it isn't surprising to find the extras offering much from the man himself, without unbalancing the extras in favour of the post-2005 series.Episode Six features a charming and touching bonus commentary with RTD and Manning discussing the impact of the final episode, her relationship with Jon Pertwee and how SJA brought her new fame, and an array of wonderful Welsh accents. This rapport continues through into an unmissable and sweet commentary between them on the Death Of Doctor.
Finally, of most interest for new series fans, is a mini-documentary that discusses the the gradual plans that fell into place to bring the show back, and how much luck has been on "new" Who's side, even as far back as the late 1980s, revealing – possibly for the first time - a bizarre connection between John Nathan-Turner and Jane Tranter (pictured below) that lead to her life-long love of the original show.
Tranter's passion is clear to all here, showing that even as the show began to die, she saw what the show could offer if it was loved again, its potential place at the BBC and what a successful Doctor Who it could mean for British television; all of this turning her into its greatest champion many years later. One hopes this will be explored and expanded for a future New Series DVD or bluray release."Easter Eggs" to hunt out include the original 1973 and 1994 repeat continuity announcements - which will give certain fans of both the Seventies and the Nineties a nostalgia rush, and an out-take from Global Conspiracy, another DVD extra featured on this set (starring Mark Gatiss).
Overall, given the iconic nature of this serial, it was only fitting that BBC Worldwide delivered a celebration on DVD that showcases its influence which continues today, and this release delivers.

Aside from the classic stories form his era, Terror of the Zygons on DVD (for the first time) and Genesis of the Daleks on audio, there's also a Fourth Doctor sonic screwdriver and a lovely, lovely letter written by Tom Baker to his fans (pictured right). It's such a nice touch and delightful to know that Tommy B cares so much for the millions of people whose lives he touched over the years.The Fourth Doctor Time Capsule will be released on July 29 in the UK only - buy it from the BBC Shop HERE. In the first part of a look back at how and why Doctor Who was recommissioned back in 2003, DWM talks to the people who ensured its successful comeback, including the then BBC Controller of Drama Commissioning Jane Tranter, BBC Wales' Head of Drama Julie Gardner, and writer Russell T Davies. “When Michael Grade arrived back at the BBC as Chairman, Mark Thompson was back as Director General,” Jane tells DWM. “Michael Grade [who had been BBC1 controller in the 1980s, and tried to cancel the show] didn't like Doctor Who at all. Mark Thompson actually asked me if we could stop. I said, no, we couldn't!"

The BFI have announced details of the upcoming screenings as part of their fantastic Doctor Who 50th Anniversary celebrations:
• Next month sees the Christopher Eccleston era remembered with Bad Wolf/Parting of the Ways, August 24 at 2pm.• September will honour the David Tennant years with The Stolen Earth/Journey's End on Sept 29 at 2pm (this is a Sunday screening).
• The Paul McGann TV Movie, Doctor Who, will be shown on Oct 5 at the earlier time of 10am. So far no guests have been announced for these three screenings (will keep you updated).
It’s also worth noting that although these events take place in two different months the member’s ballot for each event will take place at the same time (this is because the London Film Festival falls in mid October and the guide for September therefore includes the first week of October as well).
As previously reported, this Saturday sees a screening of Remembrance of the Daleks - full details HERE. The event is sold out, though you can always queue for returns on the day.
