The Doctors Revisited – The Sixth Doctor

Posted on 12:44 PM by Unknown

BBC AMERICA celebrates the Sixth Doctor, Colin Baker, in a new special of Doctor Who: The Doctors Revisited. Baker played the part from 1984 to 1986. Prior to being cast as the Doctor, Baker guest starred as Commander Maxil in the Peter Davison story Arc of Infinity, the only actor to have done so prior to taking the role. The special begins with Colin Baker, lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat, Sixth Doctor companions Nicola Bryant (Peri Brown) and Bonnie Langford (Mel Bush), among others, examining the Sixth Doctor’s adventures and discussing his famous foes, including the universe’s most slippery business man, Sil.

The special also includes the Sixth Doctor story Vengeance on Varos, in which the Doctor visits the planet Varos to obtain the rare ore Zeiton-7, vital to the functioning of his TARDIS. But Varos is a dangerous place, where rebels are tortured on live television and executions are used to win votes from the public. Trapped in the dreaded Punishment Dome, the Doctor and his companion Peri must fight for their lives - and save the starving population from the machinations of the villainous reptilian Sil.

Doctor Who: The Doctors Revisited – The Sixth Doctor premieres Saturday, June 29, 7:30pm ET/PT on BBC America

BOOK REVIEW: Harvest of Time

Posted on 7:44 AM by Unknown

HARVEST OF TIME
By Alastair Reynolds

Released June 6 (hardback)

Review by Jack Bowman

Harvest of Time is an action-heavy, classic-era Doctor Who novel, showing the Third Doctor and Jo struggle in the face of a relentless alien onslaught from a vicious, long-thought extinct enemy of the Time Lords, invading without remorse. Meanwhile UNIT are investigating a series of mysterious time-warps appearing over Earth's oceans, destroying oil-rigs and shipping traffic. However, as all of this unfolds, the strangest thing begins to happen - everyone around the Doctor and Jo are unable to remember UNIT's most dangerous prisoner: the Master. Oblivious to outside events, the murderous Time Lord is hell-bent on escaping his imprisonment, no matter the cost...

Alastair Reynolds has chosen, in the 50th Anniversary year, to revisit one of the most iconic eras of the series – the UNIT years, and the “family” of the Third Doctor, Jo, the Brigadier, Yates and Benton. Against a backdrop of a twelve million year-old civilisation, a full-scale alien invasion of Earth, and hints of a dark secret from the old days of Gallifrey, these elements promise us an epic adventure. Yet sadly, Harvest Of Time fails to completely gel into a satisfying reading experience for either fans of the Pertwee years, or for the fans of modern-day Doctor Who.

Unfortunately, in choosing one of the most familiar and iconic eras of the series, the characterisation of the UNIT regulars repeatedly fails to match those fans will know and love from the 1970s – Benton and Yates feel virtually interchangeable, resorting to unfamiliar dialogue ticks, while the Brigadier seems have lost his charming stiff-upper lip attitude, as well as acting towards the Doctor in a way that doesn't match their spiky, on-screen relationship. It also feels as if UNIT has been given a family-friendly, Torchwood-style vibe. Reynolds also takes a while to get a firm grasp on the Doctor and Jo, which along with broad characterisation for the novel's supporting players, results in a rather uneven first half.

Coming off more successfully is Reynolds' approach to the Master – here, there is a well-crafted take on Delgado's incarnation that could easily leap back into the UNIT years on television without difficulty, barring a few traits that you sense belong more to Ainley's performance. Over the course of the novel, Reynold's successfully builds up the love-hate dynamic between the two rival Time Lords, resulting in one incredibly moving scene where a terrible mistake is made.

Indeed, the mystery surrounding the Master soon becomes the most interesting and original elements of the novel, driving the action in the last half of the book, which I enjoyed the most. Certainly when the story reached the revelation behind the Master's sub-plot, I found myself hooked; it's just a shame it felt like it took a long time to reach the most interesting aspect of the overall plot.

Also, the novel suffers from trying to tie itself too closely with Doctor Who's newer legacies; elements and references from the RTD-era are included here, sometimes creating small fan-pleasing moments, while others feel forced, laboured and unnecessary.

Despite a very interesting central mystery and a fantastic exploration of an iconic villain, Harvest of Time doesn't quite succeed in being a successful return to the UNIT years.

New Doctor Who books

Posted on 4:06 AM by Unknown
BBC Books has released details of two new Doctor Who books, due for publication later this year. Check out the details below.

The Doctor: His Lives and Times
by James Goss and Steve Tribe
Published on Sept 26, priced £20 (Hardback)

‘I’m the Doctor. I’m a Time Lord. I’m from the planet Gallifrey in the constellation of Kasterborous. And I’m the man who’s going to save your life.’

He’s made a mark on almost every era of history, and he’s touched millions of lives across space and time. In these pages you’ll find just some of the stories behind those brief encounters, each of them addressing the question that must never, ever be answered: ‘Doctor Who?’

This is the story of an impossible life – of a man who borrowed a spaceship, travelled through time and continually saved the universe - as told by the Doctor’s friends, by his enemies, and by the man himself. Letters, journals, trial records, secret government files and the occasional bit of tabloid journalism reveal the never-before-told story of Gallifrey’s last Time Lord.

BOOK REVIEW: Plague of the Cybermen

Posted on 3:00 AM by Unknown

PLAGUE OF THE CYBERMEN
by Justin Richards

Out Now

Review by Douglas Barrie

Before you read this review of Plague of the Cybermen [too late, they've already started - Ed.], Justin Richards' novel set in the fictional 19th century village of Klimntenberg, cast your mind back to the middle of Series 7. In the Doctor's timeline, this adventure sits somewhere between The Snowmen and The Bells of St John, and long before Neil Gaiman's recent rejuvenation of the Cybermen in Nightmare In Silver.

Whether or not Richards deliberately put the Cybermen on their last legs is unknown, but the story itself bares some resemblance to the penultimate episode of Series 6 - 'Closing Time'. Like in that episode, a Cybership is buried underneath a building with the army stuck in hibernation inside low on power until such a time when they are at full strength.

The effect of this underground wreck brings the titular plague to Klimtenberg which is killing the locals - but the bodies are disappearing from the graves. You can join the dots if you so wish but all the signs are there, much like most of the recent Cybermen stories. This is no exception, the set-up is there, then the twist where the Doctor finds out the plan, followed by the final battle to save the village.

In the run-up and even including the final part of the book there is very little interaction with the Cybermen themselves with the 11th Doctor, whose knack for making up a plan as he goes comes across as a hinderance rather than having the usual sense of anticipation. There's much toing-and-froing between the castle and the village where most of the people live, with some stereotypical Doctor Who tunnels along the way.

Throughout his adventure the Doctor is accompanied by local school teacher Olga, who doesn't really engage the reader even though you know she's a one-off companion. The narrative is a bit swishy at times too, with the Doctor's handy sonic screwdriver jumping from being his sonic screwdriver in some chapters to being his magic wand in others when it just seems right to call a stick a stick. It's something which might confuse casual fans or even new fans casually picking up the book.

I may sound like I'm grumbling on but I did think it was enjoyable. Especially the the third quarter. Plague is the sort of book one could take on holiday knowing it's not exactly an easy read but it's not going to have you scratching your head and spending days trying to resolve your own conclusion.

It's wrapped up neatly if a little abruptly and there is one or two characters who feel underused despite their importance to the story. So I go back to my original point - remember that the Cybermen in this book are not the new breed and you'll be a satisfied customer. Otherwise an upgrade is in order.

BLOGTOR RATING 5/10

AUDIO REVIEW: Smoke and Mirrors

Posted on 3:00 AM by Unknown

SMOKE AND MIRRORS
by Steve Lyons

Out Now

Review by Emrys Matthews

Smoke and Mirrors is a new audio adventure for the Fifth Doctor in the 50th Anniversary AudioGo/Big Finish collaboration series, Destiny of The Doctor.

The Doctor, along with companions Adric, Nyssa and Tegan, answer a psionic distress call from an old friend in a fairground in 1920s England. That friend: Harry Houdini. Houdini and the Doctor suspect an alien influence may be at work. The Doctor may be right, but what he doesn’t realise is that, somewhere in the shadows of the fairground a sinister and familiar presence is waiting for him, how will he escape?

Janet Fielding and Tim Beckman
All the elements that comprise this new adventure should form a truly memorable story: escapologist extraordinaire, Harry Houdini, a wonderfully creepy fairground setting, scary fairground folk and animals and a very familiar enemy [we'll keep you spoiler~free on that one - Ed.] and yet something just seems to be missing. It’s difficult to put your finger on exactly what it is that’s absent but I came away feeling liked I’d missed something. The story starts at a lovely pace but seems to feel a little rushed towards the climax and the build to the reveal of the villain is a little underwhelming. Although what is here is great, one can’t help but feel there is some binding ingredient missing from this otherwise delicious recipe.

The story takes place sometime after The Visitation and before Earthshock. Due to Matthew Waterhouse’s lack of involvement in Doctor Who audio or other post-Who projects it feels like an exciting and untapped period to exploit for Destiny of The Doctor. The story perhaps isn’t quite as memorable as it could have been, but certainly fulfills the remit to produce a Doctor Who story that accurately represents the Fifth Doctor era.

It’s great to have such an infamous character as Houdini, that has been mentioned many a time in Doctor Who both on and off television and there are some lovely little mentions of previous times the Doctor has met the escapologist.

Another highlight is that we get to see a lighter more internal side to Tegan. She is a companion many adore and as many more find utterly infuriating, but in Smoke and Mirrors we get to see things from her point of view which really helps to understand and empathise with her as a character. Janet Fielding who has exploded back on to the Doctor Who audio scene after a very long absence does a great job voicing this tale and it’s many characters and Tim Beckman is wonderful as Houdini.

All in all it’s well worth a listen for nothing other than to see how the Doctor and Houdini interact and to hear a passionate performance from the inimitable Janet Fielding.

Doctor Who – 50 Years: The Daleks

Posted on 2:30 AM by Unknown
Doctor Who Magazine has released details of a new special edition of the publication celebrating the show's longest-running enemies, The Daleks - check out the details below (and click on the cover for a bigger version):

The first of three very special publications celebrating Doctor Who's 50th anniversary focuses on the Doctor's greatest enemies – the Daleks!

Packed into 116 pages is everything you could want to know about the metal monsters from the planet Skaro – from their original encounter with the First Doctor in 1963 to their latest appearances with the Eleventh Doctor.

Each and every Dalek TV adventure is covered, plus there are exclusive interviews with Dalek voice man, Nicholas Briggs, TV director Graeme Harper, and the actor who played Davros in the 1980s, Terry Molloy. There's also a look at 1960s Dalek merchandising; how the Daleks were redesigned for the twenty-first century; a study of the career of Dalek creator Terry Nation; and a discovery of further Dalek adventures on audio, in graphic novels, computer games and on the big screen.

This souvenir volume is lavishly illustrated throughout by rare and exclusive photographs, and specially commissioned illustrations. Doctor Who – 50 Years: The Daleks is brought to you by the publishers of the official Doctor Who Magazine, and is available now from WH Smith, newsagents and specialist retailers, priced £9.99.
